Athens Highlights

Athens is a popular tourist destination: a buzzing modern city combined with an age-old history. Iconic buildings such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Parthenon on the Acropolis are highlights of Athens. A walk through the city centre is like being in an open-air museum of antiquity mixed with twenty-first-century life.

Syntagma Square, also known as Constitution Square, is the most famous square in Athens. At the top of Syntagma is the Parliament Building. In front of it is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by Evzones in their traditional uniform with pleated skirt and shoes with pompoms. Every hour you can watch the ceremony of changing the guards.

The Plaka is the oldest part of Athens and almost completely pedestrian-only. It is right under the Acropolis and stretches almost to Syntagma. It is full of shops selling antiques, hand painted icons, replicas of ancient statues and many jewelry shops. In between the shops are taverns with outside seating serving souvlaki, pastitsio and moussaka.
